What City of Miami bulk pickup takes, and why a sofa usually doesn't fit

The City of Miami Solid Waste Department collects residential bulky trash once a week. Miami runs its own service; it is not part of Miami-Dade County's bulky waste appointment program. Your pickup day comes from the address lookup on the City's schedule page, and 311 answers questions.

The limit is the part people miss. City bulk items can be no more than three feet long and no heavier than 50 pounds, securely tied in bundles, and set in front of the property the evening before collection. That works for bundled branches and broken-down boxes. It does not work for a couch, a mattress set, a dresser or a whole room of furniture unless you cut it all down yourself.

Yard and garden material, shrubbery, vines and tree cuttings go out with bulky trash, kept separate and out of the blue recycling bins. For anything bigger than the bundles, or anything you need gone this week, a hauler is the simpler route.

The Mini Dump, and what it won't take

City residents can self-haul to the Mini Dump Facility at 1290 NW 20 Street, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 4 PM and Saturday 8 AM to noon, closed Sunday. You bring one proof of City of Miami residency, such as a Florida driver's license or a recent utility statement, and you get one trip per day, one pickup-truck load each.

It accepts household furniture, electronics, large appliances and clean yard trash. It does not accept household garbage, construction and demolition debris, hazardous waste, paint or auto parts, and it turns away dump trucks, panel trucks, vehicles with commercial markings and materials from commercial contractors. Holiday hours have run shorter in past years, so call 311 before you load up. If you have no truck, or more than one load, Dany carries it out and takes it.

Illustration: permits and plans for a tear-out03

Tear-outs and permits in the City of Miami

Demolition permits, total and partial, come from the City of Miami Building Department at 444 SW 2nd Ave, 4th Floor, through the iBuild system. The City's page says only a qualified contractor may apply, and it lists items such as a recent site survey, DERM approval and tree survey documents. The property also has to be inside City limits, which you can check by folio number. So your general contractor pulls the permit, not you and not Rapid Haul.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural part: kitchen cabinets and counters, bathroom tile and fixtures, flooring and interior finishes, then the haul. Since the Mini Dump refuses construction debris and contractor loads, the debris needs its own disposal plan, and with Dany it is already in the flat price.

Miami homes: high-rises, historic streets and everything between

Miami is a city of about 442,000 people, and the housing changes block to block. High-rise residential towers fill Edgewater, and recent growth came from high-rise construction in Downtown, Edgewater and Brickell. Coral Way is a historic residential neighborhood dating to 1922. The Upper Eastside has many 1920s homes and the MiMo Historic District, and Coconut Grove has historic homes on tree-covered roads.

That mix shapes the job. A tower unit means elevator reservations, loading dock hours and building rules, so send those with your photos and Dany plans the carry-out around them. An older house in the Upper Eastside or along Coral Way is more often a kitchen or bath tear-out, a garage, or a family clearing out a long-held home.

Miami: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Will the City of Miami pick up my couch at the curb?

Not as a whole couch. City bulk items must be no longer than three feet and under 50 pounds, tied in bundles. Furniture removal with Rapid Haul starts at $125.

Can I take remodel debris to the Mini Dump?

No. The Mini Dump at 1290 NW 20 Street does not accept construction and demolition debris or materials from commercial contractors. Debris hauling starts at $200.

Who pulls a demolition permit in Miami?

The City says only a qualified contractor may apply, through iBuild at the City Building Department. Rapid Haul handles the non-structural tear-out and the haul, not the permit.

Can you do a high-rise condo in Brickell or Edgewater?

Yes. Send the building's elevator and loading rules with your photos, and Dany books the job inside those hours.

How fast can you come in Miami?

Same-day is often possible when you call early, Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM. Text a photo to (754) 249-1015 for a flat price first.
