What Miami Beach bulk pickup takes, and where it stops

Miami Beach runs its own garbage service. It is not part of Miami-Dade County's collection area. The City's residential garbage page names Waste Connections of Florida as its contractor, and bulk pickup has to be booked by calling Waste Connections at 786.515.2726.

Each property gets six free bulk pickups a year. That covers a lot of furniture-type junk, but the rules are tight. Bulk can only go out within 24 hours of the booked date. Lumber and drywall must be cut to 5 feet or shorter and 40 pounds or lighter. Carpet has to be cut to 6 feet or less.

The City will not take building demolition debris or contractor work as bulk, along with tree removal and land clearing trash, paint, chemicals, tires, batteries, boats and vehicle parts. So a bathroom or kitchen tear-out does not belong at the curb at all. That is where Rapid Haul comes in: Dany loads it, hauls it and handles disposal, and nothing sits on the street waiting for a pickup day.

Condo and home tear-outs, and who pulls the permit

Permits in Miami Beach come from the City of Miami Beach Building Department, not the county. The City publishes a permit checklist for residential demolition. A summary of that checklist mentions utility disconnect letters, county DERM review in some cases such as waterfront sites, and a Public Works right-of-way permit.

Rapid Haul does not pull permits. The GC or the property owner does that. What Rapid Haul does is the non-structural tear-out and the haul: cabinets, vanities, tile, flooring, drywall and fixtures out, debris loaded and gone. Room demo starts at $750, and jobs of $1,000 and over take a 50% deposit.

If your building or your GC has rules about work hours, elevator use or insurance paperwork, send them with your photos. Rapid Haul carries $1M general liability with NEXT Insurance, and Dany will tell you up front if anything about your job needs sorting out first.

Art Deco walk-ups, MiMo buildings and newer high-rises

Miami Beach housing is mostly apartments and condos. The Art Deco district holds hotels and apartment buildings from 1923 to 1943, North Beach has a large collection of MiMo buildings, and high-rise condos have gone up since 2000. Several neighborhoods sit on man-made islands. Fewer than four in ten homes here are owner-occupied, and Census counts show close to a third of housing units vacant, which fits a city full of seasonal and rental units.

That shapes the work. A lot of jobs here are a unit being cleared between tenants, a seasonal owner selling, or a renovation inside a building with a service elevator. Larger multi-unit buildings use their own private trash service, so a high-rise cleanout runs through the building's arrangements, not City curbside.

Dany has already worked in Miami Beach: one job combined a decking delivery with a junk pickup on the same visit. If your project needs material dropped off as well as debris taken away, ask for both in one quote.

Getting a price from Hollywood

Rapid Haul is based in Hollywood, and Miami-Dade is part of the regular service area. Call or text (754) 249-1015 with a photo of what is going. Dany answers himself and sends one flat price that covers labor, loading, hauling and disposal. Same-day pickup is often possible when you call early, though a condo job with an elevator booking may need to fit the building's calendar.

Starting prices that fit Miami Beach jobs:

  • Furniture removal from $125
  • Appliance removal from $100
  • Construction debris from $200
  • Room demo from $750
  • House cleanout from $1,000
  • Material delivery from $85

Neighborhoods and nearby

Rapid Haul works across South Beach, including South of Fifth, Flamingo/Lummus, City Center and the Venetian islands, plus Mid-Beach (Oceanfront, Bayshore, Nautilus) and North Beach (Biscayne Point, Isle of Normandy, La Gorce, North Shore). Surfside and Bal Harbour are just north, and the City of Miami is across Biscayne Bay.

If you would rather haul it yourself, the City runs free bulk drop-off on the first weekend of each month, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 140 MacArthur Causeway (Terminal Isle) and at 75 Street and Dickens Avenue, with proof of residency. Upcoming dates include November 7 and 8 and December 5 and 6.

Miami Beach: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

How many free bulk pickups does Miami Beach give me?

Six per property per year, booked by calling Waste Connections of Florida. Bulk can only go out within 24 hours of the scheduled date.

Will the City take my renovation debris?

No. Building demolition debris and contractor work are on the City's not-taken list for bulk. Rapid Haul hauls tear-out debris, with construction debris starting at $200.

Do you pull the demolition permit?

No. The GC or property owner gets permits from the City of Miami Beach Building Department. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and the haul.

Can you work around my condo building's rules?

Yes. Send Dany the building's rules with your photos. He schedules inside your elevator and work window, and Rapid Haul carries $1M general liability.

How fast can you come?
