What Waste Management picks up in Delray Beach

Delray Beach trash is collected by Waste Management Inc. of Florida under an exclusive franchise agreement with the City, executed February 27, 2023. The City side is the Sanitation Division of Neighborhood and Community Services, (561) 243-7530. Garbage runs Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no collection on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.

The City's bulk list is short and specific: refrigerators, washing machines, lawn mowers, couches, bedding and wood fences up to six feet are collected. Construction materials, boats, junk cars, boulders and tree trunks are not. Appliances left outside must have their doors removed.

Timing is strict under the city code. Bulk is collected no more than once a week, on the first or second refuse day of your week. It goes out no earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before and must be out by 6:00 a.m. Bulk set out at the wrong time or place may be collected at $11.50 per cubic yard, billed on your water bill. A big cleanout staged early at the curb can get expensive fast.

Where you live in Delray changes the routine

Homes east of the Intracoastal Waterway, in Spanish Wells and in Sherwood Park get rear or side-door garbage service, but bulk and vegetation still go out to the street, in containers or bundles under 50 pounds each with no side over six feet. Imperial Villas, Country Manors and High Point use bagged curbside service.

Yard waste is collected once a week, with items no more than six feet long or 50 pounds, loose material bagged and land-clearing debris excluded. A 2024 City notice says yard waste is normally limited to 6 cubic yards per collection day. Household hazardous waste is never collected curbside.

Tear-outs, permits and the franchise question

Permits come from the City of Delray Beach Development Services, Building Division, at 100 NW 1st Avenue, (561) 243-7200, with permit intake from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applications go through the City's eServices portal, contractors must register first, and the application asks whether the property is in a historic district or on the Local Register. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does non-structural tear-out and the haul: water-damaged drywall, cabinets, tile, flooring and fixtures, never anything that holds up the house. Delray Beach has an exclusive franchise agreement with Waste Management, so debris from permitted demolition here may have to go through the City's franchise hauler. Dany will tell you what applies before booking, and he will not quote around it.

Old Delray: historic districts and 1920s buildings

Delray was settled in the 1880s as Linton and merged with the beach town in 1927. Atlantic Avenue is the main commercial corridor, and the city has Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival buildings from the 1920s and 30s. The 2020 Census counted 38,011 housing units and 31,203 households.

The City lists five historic districts on its Local Register of Historic Places, two of them also on the National Register. Nassau Park is the only historic district east of the Intracoastal. In older homes, tear-outs are slower and the walk-through matters more, so send good photos of the room and the access.

How it works and what it costs from Hollywood

Rapid Haul is based in Hollywood and works mostly in Broward and Miami-Dade. Delray Beach is by request, when the job is worth the drive, so there are no same-day promises here. Text photos to (754) 249-1015, Dany sends one flat price for labor, loading, hauling and disposal, and you agree on a day. Larger jobs, like a full cleanout or a room tear-out, are the ones that usually make the trip work.

Junk removal is paid after the job. Jobs of $1,000 and over, mostly demolition, take a 50% deposit.

  • House cleanouts from $1,000
  • Room demo from $750
  • Construction debris hauling from $200
  • Furniture removal from $125

Delray Beach: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

When can bulk go out in Delray Beach?

No earlier than 5:00 p.m. the day before your bulk day, and by 6:00 a.m. on the day. Bulk set out at the wrong time can be collected at $11.50 per cubic yard on your water bill.

Will Waste Management take remodel debris?

No. The City says construction materials will not be collected at the curb. Tear-out debris needs a private haul or a trip to the South County Transfer Station on SW 4th Ave.

Can Rapid Haul haul demolition debris in Delray Beach?

It depends on the job. The City has an exclusive franchise with Waste Management, so debris from permitted demolition may have to go through it. Dany tells you what applies before booking.

Do you offer same-day service in Delray Beach?

No. Palm Beach County jobs are by request, when the job is worth the drive. Text photos and Dany will set a day with you.

Does my historic district matter for a tear-out?

It can. The City's permit application asks whether the property is in a historic district or on the Local Register. Your contractor or you as the owner handles the permit.
