Pompano Beach bulk pickup: 4 cubic yards a week, and no construction debris

The City of Pompano Beach Environmental Services Department runs the bulk program (954.786.4030). Single-family homes, duplexes and triplexes get bulk collection once a week, with a maximum of 4 cubic yards, approximately 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. Multi-family buildings, mobile homes and vacant lots may need an appointment.

The City takes furniture, mattresses, appliances and other large household items, yard trimmings and branches, and certain items such as wooden doors, fence sections, sinks, toilets and bathtubs. It does not take large tree trunks, stumps or roots, construction and demolition debris, automotive or marine parts, dirt, rocks, sand or sod, or hazardous waste.

Residents can also schedule up to two extra debris collections a year, each allowing up to 16 cubic yards, but those are for vegetative debris and household waste only, must be booked before anything goes to the curb, and still take no construction debris.

The 48-hour rule and the Saturday drop-off

Bulk goes out after 5:00 p.m. the evening before your collection day or before 7:00 a.m. on the day, within 5 feet of the curb line, at least 5 feet from a neighbor's property and no more than 10 feet from the street, clear of drains, sidewalks and meters. If a pile breaks the rules, property owners have 48 hours to remove it or arrange an extra pickup. A cleanout staged at the curb for days is a violation waiting to happen.

If you have a car or pickup, the City's Public Residential Bulk Drop-Off at 1840 NW 33rd Street is open Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with proof of residency, for residential cars and pickup trucks only. Household hazardous waste and electronics can go to Broward County's North Drop-Off Center at 2780 N. Powerline Road on Saturdays; whether Pompano residents are eligible there is something to confirm with the County.

Tear-outs and permits in Pompano Beach

Permits come from the City of Pompano Beach Building Inspections Division in the Department of Development Services, 100 W. Atlantic Blvd, 954-786-4669, with plan reviews done electronically through ePlan. The City publishes submittal checklists, including one for demolition. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and the haul: condo kitchens and baths, flooring down to the slab, cabinets, vanities and fixtures, never anything that holds up the building. Since construction debris is never taken at the curb here, the haul is built into Dany's flat price.

Condos on the water, older homes inland

Pompano Beach has about 3 miles of beachfront, from A1A at Terra Mar Drive to the Hillsboro Inlet, which is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Census estimates put 41.0% of its 61,070 housing units in buildings of 20 or more units, 29.0% in single-family detached homes, and the median home built in 1974. About 55.5% of homes are owner-occupied.

That shapes the work. Many Pompano jobs are condo units: a dated kitchen or bath torn out before a remodel, carpet and tile pulled up, or a unit emptied for a sale. Send the building's elevator and loading rules with your photos. Inland, in older single-family neighborhoods, it is more often a garage, a full house cleanout or a shed.
