What Waste Management picks up in North Lauderdale

North Lauderdale switched its trash, recycling and bulk service to Waste Management on October 1, 2021. The city's WM flyer gives each area a bulk collection day, Monday through Saturday. Carts go out by 7am and three feet from parked cars, mailboxes and fencing.

What the city has not published in one clear place is the bulk limit, the list of excluded items, or exactly how often bulk comes. WM's North Lauderdale page does say construction waste, auto parts, tires and household hazardous waste don't go in the cart. If you are clearing more than a few pieces, or you have tear-out debris, don't guess. One more thing: North Lauderdale is not on Broward County's list for bulk and yard waste at the county drop-off centers. Furniture and debris go through WM bulk or a hauler.

Tear-outs on rentals: who can pull the permit

This one catches out-of-town owners. The City of North Lauderdale Permitting Division says a permit can be pulled by a contractor or by a homeowner who lives at the property. A landlord who does not live at the home cannot pull it. So a kitchen or bath redo on a rental needs a contractor on the permit.

If the home is in an HOA, the permit application also needs a notarized letter from the association, so get that approval early. Permits are filed through the city's Citizen Self Service portal.

Rapid Haul does not pull permits, and its tear-out work is non-structural only, never anything that holds up the house. Dany's crew does the non-structural tear-out (cabinets, counters, vanities, tile, flooring, drywall) and hauls it all. Room tear-outs start at $750. If your remodeler is doing the tear-out, debris hauling starts at $200.

The homes here: a 1970s building boom

North Lauderdale was dairy and farm land before architect Morris Lapidus laid out what was billed as "The City of Tomorrow." Affordable homes drove a ten-year boom of single-family neighborhoods in the 1970s, so most houses date from then. Kitchens and bathrooms from that era are exactly the rooms people redo.

About 60% of homes are owner-occupied, and households average close to three people, per the Census. That means busy garages and plenty of rentals turning over. The calls we expect here:

Paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste

Broward County does list North Lauderdale as a participating city for household hazardous waste at the County Residential Drop-Off Centers, open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Pompano Beach, Davie and West Park. Coral Springs also includes North Lauderdale in its one-day HHW collection events. Old paint and cleaners from a garage cleanout belong there, not on the truck.
