Bulk in Wilton Manors: monthly for houses, four times a year for condos

Coastal Waste & Recycling took over Wilton Manors collection on October 1, 2023, and the City manages the schedule, so there is no need to call Coastal. The bulk dates are printed on the back of every water bill and in every Town Crier.

How often you get bulk depends on what you live in. Single-family homes, townhomes and multi-family buildings up to six units get bulk pickup once a month. Condominium properties get four scheduled bulk pickups a year. Commercial customers are not eligible at all.

For a condo owner, that is the whole story. If you are moving out, selling a unit or clearing a parent's place, the next condo bulk date may be months away. Furniture and appliances can go the same week with a hauler instead.

What the bulk truck refuses

The City defines bulk as furniture, appliances and other materials not suitable for normal loading into packer trucks. It says bulk collection is not intended for hazardous chemical waste, automobile parts, major construction debris, or trash generated by contractors such as landscapers, lawn services, building contractors and painters.

Mirrors, glass tabletops, window panes and plate glass will not be picked up unless they are safely placed in a rigid container. And bulk can go out no earlier than the weekend before your scheduled date, so a big pile can't sit out for weeks.

Household hazardous waste has its own monthly program through Coastal's Door Step service, booked at least 10 days ahead. City garbage is hauled to the Waste-to-Energy plant. A public drop-off for bulk or construction debris is not published on the City pages we checked, so anything that misses the bulk date either waits inside or goes out with a hauler.

Tear-outs and Wilton Manors permits

Permits come from the City of Wilton Manors Community Development Services, Construction Services Division, which handles online permitting at (954) 390-2180. The City publishes a demolition checklist. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Because the City says bulk is not for trash generated by contractors, debris from a tear-out has to be hauled away, not left at the curb. Rapid Haul does the non-structural part, such as kitchen cabinets, bathroom tile and fixtures, flooring and interior finishes, never anything that holds up the house, and takes the debris in the same trip.

Island City homes

Wilton Manors is ringed by the North and South Forks of the Middle River, which is why it is nicknamed the Island City. Wilton Drive is its arts and entertainment district, and the Highland Estates neighborhood changed from 1995 to 2005 into an upscale area with several new modern townhouse developments.

Census estimates put 45.6% of its 7,377 housing units in single-family detached homes and 23.6% in buildings of 20 or more units, with a median build year of 1971 and 61.6% owner-occupied. Jobs split the same way: condo and apartment move-outs and furniture pickups on one side, and older houses with dated kitchens, baths and full garages on the other.
