What Dania Beach bulk pickup takes, and where it stops

Waste Management runs Dania Beach bulk pickup for the city, once a month by zone. The city's rule is "Bulk pickup is for six cubic yards maximum." That covers a few pieces of furniture. It is not built for a whole house, so a full cleanout usually needs a second pickup at a charge, or a hauler.

The rules are tight on timing too. Nothing goes to the curb more than 24 hours before your zone's date, and the fine lands on the property owner, plus removal costs. Commercial and multi-family buildings get no bulk service at all, so if you live in a condo or a fourplex, the city truck is not coming for your old furniture.

Here is what the city says it will and won't take at the curb:

• Taken: furniture, mattresses, carpet, appliances and water heaters, brush cut to four feet
• Taken with prep: refrigerators with the door removed, A/C units with the Freon removed
• Not taken: liquids, glass, tires, auto and boat parts, hazardous waste
• Not taken: roofing and construction or demolition debris, including concrete, tile, drywall, toilets and sinks

Bathroom and kitchen tear-outs in Dania Beach

That last bullet is why a lot of Dania Beach tear-outs end up with a hauler. The old toilet, the vanity, the tile and the drywall from a bathroom redo are all banned from bulk. The city's own page sends construction and demolition material to the Broward County Landfill instead.

Permits here come from the City of Dania Beach Building Division, part of Community Development. It processes applications, reviews plans and runs inspections, and its online portal lists residential demolition permit types. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit. The homes and jobs we see around Dania Beach

Dania Beach is Broward's first city, incorporated in 1904, and less than half the homes are owner-occupied (46.8% in the latest Census figures). That means plenty of rentals turning over, and landlords clearing out what a tenant left behind. A full tenant move-out can easily run past the six cubic yards the city allows.

The city sits next to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, its limits are not one continuous piece, and the Dania Cut-Off Canal and the marine industry run through it. Antique Row along Federal Highway gives it the nickname Antique Capital of the South. Estate and downsizing cleanouts are common, and so are single-item pickups when a new piece of furniture is on its way in.

If you'd rather haul it yourself

Dania Beach residents can use the Broward County Residential Drop-Off Centers for bulk and yard waste. They open Saturdays only, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Reese Road in Davie, West Hallandale Beach Boulevard in West Park, and North Powerline Road in Pompano Beach. Bring proof of residency. The limit is four visits a month, nothing bigger than a 1-ton pickup, and no trailer longer than 8 feet.

That works for a pickup bed of brush. It does not work for a houseful of furniture on a weekday. That is when a call to Dany makes sense. Junk removal is paid after the job, and the crew sweeps the space before they leave.
