What Fort Lauderdale's monthly bulk pickup takes, and when to call a hauler

Since July 31, 2023, WM has handled trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk for the City of Fort Lauderdale. Bulk goes once a month on your scheduled day. The pile has to be at the curb by 7 a.m., it can't go out more than 24 hours early, and it can't sit more than 24 hours after pickup or you can be cited.

The city caps that pile at 10 cubic yards. Anything bigger means a special pickup by appointment, for a fee. And some things never qualify: concrete, tile, pavers, dirt, sod and sand, household garbage, hazardous liquids, and tree sections over the city's size limit. Loose glass has to be in a sturdy, rigid container.

Two more things catch people out. Apartments, condos and commercial properties are not on the city's bulk route at all; they contract with their own hauler. And Fort Lauderdale is not on Broward County's list of cities whose residents can use the county bulk and yard drop-off centers. So when the pile is too big, too early, or full of tile, there is no free fallback. Bathroom and kitchen tear-outs: Fort Lauderdale permits and the debris

Permits in Fort Lauderdale come from the city's Development Services Department, Building Services. The city publishes a demolition permit package, and it keeps a separate checklist for interior-only demolition. A full demolition package asks for things like a current survey, a Broward County asbestos statement, a sewer cap or septic abandonment permit and an FPL disconnect letter.

Your GC or you as the property owner pull the permit. Rapid Haul does the non-structural part: cabinets, vanities, tile, drywall, flooring, fixtures, torn out by hand and hauled away. Never anything that holds up the house, and Dany does not pull permits.

This matters here because the city's bulk pile refuses tile and concrete. A gutted bathroom is mostly exactly that, so the debris needs its own haul no matter what. Canal homes, high-rise condos and everything between

Fort Lauderdale calls itself the Venice of America, with about 165 miles of inland waterways inside city limits and the New River running through town. That means a lot of backyard docks, seawall work and waterfront patios, and the debris from them. Downtown around Las Olas Boulevard is high-rise condos and new hotels, where the job is less about the pile and more about the freight elevator, the loading dock and the hours the building allows.

About 54% of homes here are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied value is around $486,700 (Census, 2020 to 2024). So the calls run from a renter's furniture between leases to a full estate cleanout before a waterfront sale.
