What Boca Raton's weekly bulk day takes, and what it won't

Boca Raton runs its own trash service. The city's Sanitation Division collects garbage twice a week, and recycling, vegetation and bulk once a week on the same day: Monday in Area 1, Tuesday in Area 2, Thursday in Area 3, Friday in Area 4.

Bulk means household items too big for the container, like couches, chairs, mattresses, tables, bicycles, refrigerators, washers and dryers. Put them at least 5 feet from your container, no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on the day. Take refrigerator and washer or dryer doors off or secure them. Keep bulk and vegetation in separate piles, because the city will not collect bulk that is mixed with vegetation. A refused pile has to be cleared off the swale within 12 hours.

For an off-schedule pickup, the city has a Pay for Pickup option. The 2023 to 2024 Sanitation Guide listed a minimum fee of $150.81, with extra charges above that size. That works for a washer and dryer. It gets expensive for a whole estate, and that is the job a hauler is built for.

Tear-outs in Boca Raton: the franchise-hauler rule comes first

The city's bulk service will not collect construction and demolition debris, and its list of refused items is long: cabinetry, bathtubs, sinks and toilets, carpet, tile, every kind of flooring, drywall, decking and fencing, sheds, pavers, concrete, roofing material, lumber and pallets.

There is also a city ordinance on top of that. Under Chapter 14, Sections 21 and 22 of the City Code, debris from construction and demolition inside city limits has to be collected by an authorized franchise hauler, and Rapid Haul is not on the city's list. So debris from permitted demolition in Boca Raton may have to go through one of the city's franchise haulers. Dany will tell you what applies to your job before you book, not after.

Permits come from the City of Boca Raton Building Division at 200 NW 2nd Avenue (561-393-7930). Your GC or you as the owner pull them. Rapid Haul never pulls permits and only does non-structural work.

Estates, gated communities and historic districts

A lot of Boca Raton's housing is large. Many mansions and estates have been built here, and Forbes ranked the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club the third most exclusive gated community in the US in 2017. About a square mile of the city sits on the barrier island. The 2020 Census counted 48,728 housing units, 16.2% of them vacant, which fits a city with plenty of seasonal homes.

There is older Boca too. Old Floresta has been a city historic district since 1990, and Pearl City, platted in 1915, sits just north of downtown. Camino Gardens was built on the old Africa U.S.A. park site.

The cleanouts that make sense here: an estate after a sale or a passing, a seasonal home being emptied, furniture and appliances on a timeline the weekly bulk day doesn't match, or a gated community that won't let a pile sit at the curb. Tell Dany the gate and HOA rules when you text.
