What Parkland's monthly bulk pickup takes, and what it leaves

The City of Parkland contracts with Waste Management for all garbage and bulk trash pickup (WM: 954.974.7500). Garbage goes twice a week. Bulk is once a month, 12 times a year, and the city's page says each pickup date allows up to 15 cubic yards of bulk trash. That is a generous allowance. The catch is what is excluded and when you can set it out:

  • Bulk goes curbside no more than 48 hours before the scheduled pickup for large lots (72 hours if a weekend is in between)
  • Construction materials, paint, auto parts, electronics and household cleaners are excluded
  • Tree stumps and mature trees only if cut to a size a grapple truck can handle
  • Refrigerators and air conditioners must have all freon removed
  • Tree trimmings in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, within 5 feet of the road
  • Garbage goes out no more than 12 hours before collection

When a hauler beats waiting for bulk day

Parkland used to have a bulk drop-off. The city's page now says plainly that bulk drop-off is no longer available. The Broward County Residential Drop-Off Centers that Parkland residents can use take household hazardous waste and electronics only, on Saturdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, at the North center (2780 N. Powerline Road, Pompano Beach), Central (5490 Reese Road, Davie) and South (5601 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., West Park).

That leaves two options for anything past the monthly date: wait for the next one, or hire a hauler. Waiting is fine for a few items. It is not fine when a house is closing, a move-out has a deadline, or the pile includes things WM excludes, like an old TV, a refrigerator that still has freon in it, or leftover drywall and tile.

Dany's crew carries everything out, loads it and hauls it in one visit, whether it is in the garage, the upstairs bedrooms or the back of the yard.

Sheds, decks and backyard cleanups on Parkland lots

Parkland's history is in its yards. Wikipedia notes the city's emphasis on park space, environmental preservation and equestrianism, to the point that in Parkland's first decade horses outnumbered residents. There were no stores or traffic lights until the mid-1990s and early 2000s, when large developments such as Heron Bay and Parkland Isles were built. The city reaches west to the Everglades, with Coral Springs to the south, Coconut Creek to the east and unincorporated West Boca Raton across the county line to the north.

Taking down a backyard structure is a different job from setting household bulk at the curb, and the debris from it can fall under the construction materials exclusion. Rapid Haul removes metal and wood sheds from $350, tears out old wood decks from $550, and clears patio furniture, play sets and storm-damaged junk from the yard. Fence removal is removal only, never installation.

Newer homes, remodels and the city's demolition checklist

Parkland's housing is young for South Florida. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median year built at 2006, with 11,501 housing units, 85.1% owner-occupied and 84.2% single-family detached. Newer homes still get remodeled, and every kitchen, bathroom or flooring job leaves construction debris that WM will not take.

Permits come from the City of Parkland Building Department (954.753.5447). Submittals and inspections run through the MGO permitting software, and the city's permit checklists page posts both a residential and a commercial demolition checklist. Your general contractor or you as the owner pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not pull permits and never touches anything that holds up the house.

What Dany does is the non-structural tear-out and the haul: cabinets, counters, vanities, tile, flooring and drywall. Room demo starts at $750. If your crew already tore it out, construction debris hauling starts at $200.

No more than 48 hours before the scheduled pickup for large lots, or 72 hours if the window includes a weekend.
