What Plantation's bulk pickup takes, and what it leaves behind

Plantation's trash and bulk pickup is run by Waste Management under contract with the city, with Public Works overseeing it. Single-family homes get bulk once a month, and the dates are split into East of University and West of University windows. Condo buildings with more than 4 units get four bulk collections a year.

The city allowance is generous: the city sets it at "15 cubic yards per pickup (about the size of a VW Bug)." The catch is timing and what goes in the pile. Bulk can go out no earlier than the Saturday before your date and no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day. Bulk in black bags is not picked up, Freon appliances need the Freon removed and a sticker, and the city treats a mixed pile as "contaminated" and leaves it.

The city also lists what it will not take at the curb. That list is where most of Dany's Plantation calls come from:

  • "Home remodeling or demolition debris" and "Contractor generated waste"
  • Drywall, tile, shingles, concrete, bricks and pavers
  • Fencing and wood
  • Electronics, tires and auto parts
  • Anything not generated by the residence itself (bulk is "Residential only")

Tear-outs and permits in Plantation

Building permits in Plantation come from the City of Plantation Building Department at 401 NW 70 Terrace, through the city's online Citizen Access Portal. The city says permits are required to "erect, enlarge, alter, remove, demolish or repair a structure." Your GC or you, the owner, pull the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

What Rapid Haul does is the non-structural tear-out and the haul. That means old cabinets and counters, bathroom tile and fixtures, carpet and flooring, non-structural interior partition walls, decks, sheds and fences. Because the city's bulk truck refuses drywall, tile, wood and remodel debris, all of it leaves on Dany's truck instead of sitting at the curb waiting for a pickup that won't come.

Plantation Acres, Jacaranda and the canal streets

Plantation is a city of about 91,750 people, and most homes are owner-occupied (64.3% per the Census). The median home value is $483,500, so a lot of the work here is getting a house ready to sell, rent or remodel.

West of the city center, Plantation Acres is a Special Public Interest Rural District with large lots and the city's Equestrian Center. Those lots are where fence removal, shed teardowns and big yard clear-outs come up, and fencing and wood are exactly what the curb will not take. Plantation Isles sits on canal-front streets beside the New River Canal. Jacaranda, west of University Drive, was planned as Broward's answer to Coral Gables.

Yard waste follows its own rules: clear bags only, trimmings and fronds cut and tied in 6-foot lengths, and no stumps or logs. The city's Horticultural Recycling Center at 750 NW 91st Avenue takes yard waste for a fee.

A Sunday-night cleanout in Plantation Acres

One of Dany's own posted jobs is from Plantation Acres. A realtor texted on a Sunday night with a showing the next morning and junk still in the house. Dany headed over that night, and the realtor walked him through what stayed and what went: furniture staged in the garage, a bed frame, a dresser, shelving, a small table and the mattresses. That house could not wait for the West of University bulk window. Dany has also posted a construction debris pickup tagged Plantation.

Plantation: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Will Plantation's bulk pickup take my old fence or remodel debris?

No. The city's list of items not accepted includes fencing, wood, drywall, tile, concrete, shingles and "Home remodeling or demolition debris." Rapid Haul takes those, with one flat price after a photo.

When can I put bulk out in Plantation?

No earlier than the Saturday before your scheduled pickup and no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day. Your date depends on whether you live east or west of University Drive. If the house needs clearing sooner, Dany can usually come the same day you call early.

Do you pull the permit for a kitchen or bath tear-out in Plantation?

No. Permits come from the City of Plantation Building Department, and your GC or you as the owner pull them. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and hauls the debris.

How much does junk removal cost in Plantation?

It depends on how much goes and what it is. Furniture removal starts at $125, garage cleanouts at $300 and full house cleanouts at $1,000. Text a photo and Dany sends one all-in price.

Can you clear a house before a showing on short notice?

Often, yes. Dany answers his own phone, and same-day is often possible when you call early, Monday to Saturday.
