Coral Terrace follows the county's bulky waste rules

Coral Terrace is unincorporated, so Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management collects here, with waste twice a week and recycling every other week. Each household gets two bulky pickups per calendar year, January 1 through December 31. Each is "up to 25 cubic yards," the two can be combined "into one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards," and excess bulky waste you authorize carries "a fee of $31 per cubic yard," per the county's 2025 Waste Service Guide.

The request has to be made before anything goes on the curb, online at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, on the app or by calling 311. Appointments open 30 days ahead, and waitlists or fit-ins are not available. The pile goes out no more than 3 days before the date and by 7 a.m., within 10 feet of the street. Since April 1, 2023, an early pile can draw a warning notice or a civil citation.

The county guide lists what stays off the curb:

  • Home chemical waste, rock and dirt
  • Any single item over 150 lbs.
  • More than three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris
  • More than three cubic yards of wooden fence
  • Refrigerators and freezers with the doors still on (doors must be removed)

Bathroom and kitchen tear-outs, and county permits

There is no city building department in Coral Terrace. Demolition permits come from the Miami-Dade County Building Department, part of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, and the county notes an additional form for owner-builder permits. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out: the tile, tub, vanity and toilet in a bathroom, the cabinets and counters in a kitchen, flooring and interior partition walls. A single bathroom quickly passes the county's construction debris limit at the curb, and the Trash and Recycling Centers limit it to three (3) cubic yards per customer per day. One haul by Dany's crew replaces a lot of weekend trips.

If you do haul some of it yourself, the centers take household trash, tree and yard cuttings and up to three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris, and most take up to four tires and white goods. Food and kitchen garbage is not allowed.

Illustration: the kind of homes in this area03

Post-war homes, Schendley Park and Little Gables

Coral Terrace grew after World War II, when many ex-soldiers could afford newly built homes here. An FIU and Miami-Dade TPO community profile describes it as a working to middle class neighborhood with a 70.1% homeownership rate. The 2020 census counted 23,142 people in 7,745 households and 8,113 housing units, with only 4.5% vacant. The Palmetto Expressway, built in the late 1950s, defines the western edge.

Homes from that building wave are the kind where an original bathroom or kitchen finally gets redone, and the old tile, cabinets and fixtures have to go somewhere. Schendley Park, a smaller area within Coral Terrace, has a strong homeowners association, so check its rules before staging anything outside. The profile also names Little Gables.

Coral Terrace: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

How many bulky pickups do I get in Coral Terrace?

Two per calendar year, January through December, booked with the county before you set anything out. Each is up to 25 cubic yards, or combine them into one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards.

Can I put bathroom tear-out debris at the curb?

Only up to three cubic yards. The county guide says not to put more than three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris at the curb, and it also bans rock, dirt and any item over 150 lbs. A full bathroom usually needs a hauler; Rapid Haul's construction debris pickup starts at $200.

Which county drop-off center should I use?

The closest by address are Snapper Creek at 2200 SW 117 Avenue and Sunset Kendall at 8000 SW 107th Ave. The county says you do not have to use the closest one, you need a Florida license or ID, and centers are not for commercial use.

Who issues demolition permits in Coral Terrace?

The Miami-Dade County Building Department, since Coral Terrace is unincorporated. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit; Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and haul.

What does a room demo cost?

Room demo starts at $750, and the flat price depends on what comes out. Jobs of $1,000 and over take a 50% deposit.
