County pickup in Opa-locka, and when it falls short

Opa-locka's garbage is collected by Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management, the same service that covers unincorporated Dade. Garbage goes twice a week, recycling every other week. Bulky items and yard debris go by appointment, two pickups a year per household, up to 25 cubic yards each.

Booking comes first: online at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, on the MDC Solid Waste app, or by calling 311, up to 30 days ahead. Nothing goes to the curb before you have a date, and then only in the last 3 days before it, by 7 a.m. on the day. Since April 1, 2023, the county can issue a warning or a civil citation for a pile put out early.

That works for a sofa and a mattress in a plastic bag. It does not work well for a whole house. Clearing a family home often takes more than one appointment allows, and the next open slot may be weeks off. That is the job Rapid Haul is built for: one visit, everything out, one flat price.

Illustration: the kind of homes in this area02

Moorish Revival streets and older homes

Opa-locka was founded by Glenn Curtiss in 1926 and is known for Moorish Revival architecture: domes, minarets and outdoor spiral stairs. Twenty surviving buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places as the Opa-locka Thematic Resource Area, and streets carry Arabian Nights names like Sharazad Boulevard, Sinbad Avenue and Ali Baba Avenue.

Housing is primarily single-family, with some multifamily, in a city of about 4.2 square miles and about 6,200 housing units. When a family home here changes hands, there can be decades of furniture, boxes and appliances to clear before anyone can paint or list it. House cleanouts start at $1,000 and furniture removal at $125. Mark anything you are keeping, and the crew works around it.

Illustration: permits and plans for a tear-out03

Tear-outs and permits in Opa-locka

Permits here come from the City of Opa-locka Building & Licenses Department at 780 Fisherman St., (305) 953-2868 option 4, or building@opalockafl.gov. The City's permit application has a box for Demolition/Partial. Its owner-builder form says owners must disconnect all utilities before demolition and get a state permit to abandon any septic tank.

If your property is an older building, check its historic status with the department before any tear-out starts. Rapid Haul does not pull permits; the GC or the property owner does. What Rapid Haul does is the non-structural tear-out (a worn bathroom, kitchen cabinets, flooring) and hauling all of it away. Room demo starts at $750, and jobs of $1,000 and over take a 50% deposit.

County drop-off centers near Opa-locka

Opa-locka residents may use Miami-Dade's 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers. Bring a Florida driver's license or ID that matches an eligible account. They are open every day from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except MLK Day, Independence Day and Christmas.

None is inside the city. Centers listed in north-central Dade include North Dade (21500 NW 47 Avenue), Norwood (19901 NW 7th Avenue, Miami Gardens), Golden Glades (140 NW 160th Street) and West Little River (1830 NW 79th Street). Construction and demolition debris is limited to three cubic yards (a pile no larger than 6 green 96-gallon carts) per customer per day, kitchen garbage is not allowed, and oversize trailers are turned away.

Opa-locka: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

How do I get county bulky pickup in Opa-locka?

Book first at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, on the MDC Solid Waste app or by calling 311. You get two pickups a year, and the pile can go out no more than 3 days early.

Can you clear a whole house in one visit?

Usually, yes. Send photos of each room and Dany gives one flat price. House cleanouts start at $1,000.

Will the county take an old mattress?

Yes, on a bulky appointment, but it has to be enclosed in a plastic bag. If you would rather not wait for a date, Rapid Haul takes mattresses with furniture removal from $125.

Do I need anything before a tear-out on an older Opa-locka home?

Check historic status and permits with the Building & Licenses Department. For demolition, utilities must be disconnected first, and the GC or owner pulls the permit.

Is there a dump I can use near Opa-locka?

Residents can use the county Trash and Recycling Centers with a Florida ID. North Dade, Norwood, Golden Glades and West Little River are listed in the area.
