What Waste Pro takes in the Village, and when

The Village of Palm Springs contracts with Waste Pro for all solid waste collection. Garbage goes twice a week, and recycling, yard trash and bulk trash once a week each. Service complaints go to (561) 478-9590, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

Your bulk day depends on Canal 10. Under the Village's 2023 route schedule, homes north of Canal 10 get bulk on Thursday and homes south of it get bulk on Friday. Carts, yard trash and bulk may not go to the curb until after 4:00 PM the day before, and should be out by 7:00 AM on pickup day. A cleanout pile can only be staged the evening before.

Bulk covers refrigerators, ranges, toilets, washers, dryers, water heaters and similar appliances, household furniture, bedding and large boxes. It must not be mixed with yard trash or other garbage. Construction materials, junk car parts, boulders and tree trunks will not be collected. The Village says Waste Pro sets the bulk volume limits within its code, but the number is not published on the pages we checked.

Yard trash limits, and why overgrown yards need a haul

Curbside yard trash in Palm Springs has a size rule: tree trimmings and branches no more than four inches in diameter and no longer than four feet. Grass, leaves and other loose material must be bagged or in a container.

That is fine for a weekend trim. It is not fine for a backyard that has gone wild for years, with thick limbs, vines over a fence and brush piled against a shed. Cutting all of that to four-foot pieces and spreading it over several weeks is slow, and tree trunks are refused outright. Dany clears the brush and debris, loads it, and hauls it in one trip. Send a photo first and he will tell you honestly what he can take.

Tear-outs and Village permits

Permits come from the Village of Palm Springs Planning, Zoning and Building Department at 226 Cypress Lane, open Monday to Friday 8am to 3pm with no new submittals after 2pm, and filed through the MaintStar online portal. The Village lists a new phone line, (561) 584-8280. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Two Village forms matter for remodels. There is an asbestos notification statement for all demos and renovations, and a pod or dumpster permit application if a container sits on the property. The Village also says every building permit application must be notarized by both the owner and the contractor, whatever the value of the work. Rapid Haul does non-structural tear-out, like cabinets, tile, flooring and fixtures, and hauls the debris away, so no container sits in the driveway.

Illustration: the kind of homes in this area04

A 1957 village that keeps growing

Palm Springs was built on the Boutwell dairy farm and chartered on May 31, 1957, with about 800 homes built in its first two years. It has grown by annexation since 1998 and was the fastest-growing municipality in Palm Beach County from 2010 to 2020. The 2020 Census counted 26,890 residents, 10,864 housing units and 9,818 households.

Older homes in the original village mean original kitchens and baths, long-used garages, and yards that have grown in over decades.
