Hollywood's curb refuses tear-out debris, and fines for trying

Hollywood's Environmental Services Division runs garbage, bulk and yard waste collection, with Waste Pro as the city's contracted hauler. The city's bulk rules list what it refuses, and construction and demolition material, rocks and soil are on that list. A bathroom's worth of tile, a vanity and a cast iron tub cannot go on the swale.

The penalties are real. If refused material goes out, the city gives you 24 hours to remove it. If you don't, the city removes it and charges the disposal fee plus a $200 administration fee, and repeat civil citations run $75, $150, $250 and then $500.

The city's New Resident Guide points residents with construction debris to the Broward County Landfill, 7101 SW 205 Avenue, where there is a fee. The guide is undated, so call the county at 954-357-5330 before you load a truck.

Hollywood's C&D hauling rule, said plainly

Hollywood's city code, section 50.05, says no one may collect, convey or dispose of construction and demolition material accumulated in the city without first getting a permit from the Director of Public Works. That permit acts as a franchise. It runs one year, renews every September 30, and requires insurance and delivery to a facility the City Manager designates.

What that means for you: debris from a permitted demolition in Hollywood may have to go through a city-permitted franchise hauler. Rapid Haul does not claim to be one. Before you book, Dany looks at your scope and tells you what applies, including whether the debris has to go with a permitted hauler while his crew does the tear-out.

That conversation takes a few minutes and saves you a code problem later.

Permits at City Hall, and the partial-demo catch

Building permits in Hollywood are issued by Building staff at City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, phone 954-967-4357, Monday to Thursday, 7 AM to 6 PM. Since August 4, 2026, new applications go through the Accela Citizen Access portal. The general contractor or the property owner pulls the permit. Dany does not pull permits.

One rule on the city's Demolition Checklist matters for remodels: permit applications for partial demolition of a structure will not be issued without the permit application for the renovation or rehabilitation work. In practice, the tear-out and the remodel are permitted together, so get your builder's plan in place before you book the demo date.

Rapid Haul's part is non-structural: cabinets, fixtures, tile, flooring, drywall and partition walls your builder signs off on, never anything that holds up the house. Electric, water and gas in the work area must be off and capped first.

Old Hollywood bathrooms and beach condos

Hollywood was founded in 1921, and by 1960 it had more than 12,170 single-family homes, according to Wikipedia. The city calls Hollywood Lakes its oldest neighborhood, and buildings in the beach district date back to the 1920s and 1930s. Older homes mean original tile bathrooms, mortar-bed floors and heavy fixtures that take real work to remove.

If your home is inside one of the city's historic districts, such as the Lakes area or the Hollywood Beach overlay, ask the Building staff what extra review applies before demo day.

Condo guts are the other big job. City code requires buildings of more than two units to provide their own refuse collection, so condo boards hire a city-permitted private hauler. Ask your building manager about elevator booking, work hours and where debris may be staged, and send the rules to Dany.

How a interior demolition job runs in Hollywood

  1. Kitchen before tear-out, with cabinets and countertops still in place

    Step 1

    Confirm scope and shut-offs

The crew walks each room with you, marks what stays, and checks that electric, water and gas are already off and capped.

  2. Crew member pulling old tile and fixtures out of a bathroom

    Step 2

Cover paths and gut the room

Hallways and floors that stay get protected, then cabinets, fixtures, tile, flooring and drywall come out in order.

  3. Bagged interior demolition debris carried out to the truck

    Step 3

    Carry out and haul

Debris is bagged or carried straight to the truck, then hauled to disposal the same day.

  4. Empty room swept down to the slab after interior demolition

    Step 4

    Sweep down to the subfloor

The room is swept clean so your builder can measure and start without clearing scraps first.

Hollywood: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Who pulls the demolition permit in Hollywood?

The general contractor or the property owner, through City Hall's Accela portal. Partial demolition permits are issued together with the renovation application.

How much is interior demolition in Hollywood?

Room demo starts at $750. Heavy tile, layers and condo access move the price. Jobs of $1,000 and over take a 50% deposit.
