Why Davie's bulk day is not built for a hot tub

The Town of Davie's bulk list, collected monthly by Coastal Waste & Recycling, names furniture, mattresses, carpets, household items and appliances. A hot tub is not on it. The Town also says bulk should not exceed 15 cubic yards, and anything over that is billed per yard.

The surround makes it harder. If the tub sits on pavers or has tile steps, the Town's rules say tile, rock and other earthen materials must go out in a hard-bottom container. Most people would rather not cut up a spa, sort the pieces and wait a month for the truck.

Rapid Haul takes the whole thing in one visit: shell, cabinet, cover, steps and the equipment inside. If you are not sure whether the Town or Coastal would take your tub, ask them. If you would rather not deal with it, send Dany the photos.

Power and water: the two things to arrange first

Most hot tubs are wired to the house. Rapid Haul does no electrical work, so an electrician has to shut off the circuit and disconnect the tub before the crew arrives. If your electrician says the disconnect needs a permit, that goes through the Town of Davie Building Division at 8800 SW 36th Street, and the owner or the electrician handles it.

Drain the tub the day before. A full spa holds hundreds of gallons, and the crew cannot cut or carry it until it is empty. Leave the drain open so the inside dries out a little.

If the crew shows up and the tub is still wired or still full, the job has to wait. That is why Dany asks about both when you book.

Where Davie hot tubs tend to sit

Davie's housing runs from subdivision lots to the more rural western side of town, which a Florida Department of Transportation study describes as having extensive open space tracts. On a deep lot the tub can sit a long way from the street, behind a pool fence or a locked gate. That walk changes how the crew takes it out, so photograph the path, not just the tub.

Some tubs sit free on a concrete pad. Others are sunk into a wood deck or tucked under a screened patio roof. A free-standing tub that fits through the gate may go out whole. A sunken one, or one that is wider than the side yard, gets cut into sections where it sits.

If the deck around it is rotting too, that is deck tear-out, which starts at $550. Dany can price the tub and the deck as one job.

How Dany prices a hot tub removal in Davie

There is no single starting price for hot tubs, because yards vary so much. You get a flat price after Dany sees photos of the tub, the gate and the route to the street. It includes labor, any cutting, loading, hauling and disposal.

The number goes up with a larger spa, a tub set into a deck, stairs or a raised platform, a narrow side yard, and a long carry to the truck. It goes down when the tub is small, drained, disconnected and close to the driveway. Hot tub removal is paid after the job. If the total reaches $1,000 or more, for example with a full deck tear-out, Dany asks for a 50% deposit and tells you that with the quote.

After the tub is gone

You are left with a bare pad or patio, swept of the foam, fiberglass and screws that come out when a tub is cut. The pad stays unless you ask for it to go, and so does the disconnect your electrician left. Many Davie owners use the spot for a patio set, a grill area or a garden bed.

Davie is one of Dany's five busiest cities, and Rapid Haul is based in neighboring Hollywood. Once the electrician has been out and the tub is drained, a slot is usually easy to find. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM.

How a hot tub removal job runs in Davie

  1. Step 1

Confirm power off and water out

The crew checks that your electrician has disconnected the tub and that it is drained before any work starts.

  2. Step 2

Break it down or move it whole

If the tub fits through the gate, it goes out whole. If not, the crew cuts it into sections right where it sits.

  3. Step 3

    Carry out and haul away

Every piece is carried to the truck and hauled to proper disposal, included in the price.

  4. Step 4

    Sweep the pad

We pick up the debris and sweep the pad or patio. You look it over, then pay.

Davie: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Will Davie's bulk pickup take an old hot tub?

The Town's bulk list does not name hot tubs or spas. Ask the Town or Coastal Waste & Recycling if you want to try the curb. Otherwise, Rapid Haul removes and hauls it in one visit.

How much does hot tub removal cost in Davie?

Dany gives a flat price after seeing photos. Size, a deck around the tub, gates and the length of the carry are what move it.

Do I need an electrician before you come?

Yes, if the tub is hardwired. An electrician must disconnect it first. Rapid Haul does not do electrical work.

Can you remove the deck around the hot tub too?

Yes. Deck tear-out starts at $550, and Dany can quote the tub and the deck together as one flat price.

Do I have to drain the tub?

Yes. Drain it the day before so the crew can cut and carry it. If it has been sitting full for a while, mention that when you text.
