Hollywood's bulk pickup and its 6 cubic yard cap

Hollywood collects bulk once a month, on a day you look up by address on the city's Sanitation and Code Compliance Zones Map. The city says bulk waste material shall be no more than 6 cubic yards. A packed garage usually holds more than one month's allowance.

For bigger loads, the city tells residents to arrange a paid pickup ahead of time or use a private hauler. City code section 50.04 says bulk over the limit will not be picked up unless prior arrangements have been made and a fee paid, and that the customer may also contract with any franchised hauler approved by the city. Ask Dany what applies to your address before you book.

Then there is the clock. Material may not go out more than 24 hours before your service day. Clearing a garage over a weekend and piling it on the swale early is exactly what the city fines.

Garage items the city refuses

Garages collect the things Hollywood's bulk truck will not take. The refused list includes machinery or equipment, highly flammable substances, hazardous waste, liquid wastes, construction and demolition material, rocks and soil. A dead mower, an old compressor, leftover tile, paint and pool chemicals all fall on that list.

The city also refuses any pile that mixes bulk with yard waste. If the garage holds bags of leaves or palm fronds, they go out separately on yard day, within the city's 4 cubic yards per week.

Alley garages in the older neighborhoods

Hollywood is an older city. It was founded in 1921, and by 1960 it had more than 12,170 single-family homes, according to Wikipedia. The city describes Hollywood Lakes, its oldest neighborhood, as having alleys for garage access and homes with rear apartments.

Alley garages change how a cleanout works. The city's two pages disagree on alleys: one says bulk may go at the rear of the property if you have an alley, the other says bulk may not be piled in the alley right-of-way. Rather than guess which rule your inspector reads, have the crew load straight from the garage to the truck. Tell Dany whether the truck should come down the alley or park out front.

Wherever the garage is, the city wants bulk kept away from guy wires, utility poles, trees, water meters, cable boxes and fences. A truck at the door avoids all of it.

What a garage cleanout costs in Hollywood

Garage cleanouts start at $300 for a light job: a few items and boxes along one wall. A one-car garage packed to the rafters, or a two-car garage you cannot walk into, costs more. Dany prices it from one wide photo from the door plus close-ups of anything heavy.

The flat price covers the crew, loading, hauling and disposal. Heavy items like tile, pavers and bagged concrete move the number more than cardboard does. You pay after the job, once the floor is swept.

Self-hauling versus a pickup

Hollywood is a participating city at Broward County's residential drop-off centers in Pompano Beach, Davie and West Park. They are open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., up to four times a month, with photo ID and a document showing your address. Vehicles larger than a 1-ton pickup and trailers longer than 8 feet are turned away, and garbage, propane tanks and tires are not accepted.
