What the county's bulky pickup covers in Palmetto Bay

The Village does not run its own trash service. All garbage, bulky trash and recycling for Palmetto Bay properties is handled by Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste. Garbage goes twice a week. Bulky waste is two appointments a year per household of up to 25 cubic yards each, which can be combined into one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards. Extra can be removed for a fee per cubic yard with a signed Excess Yardage Approval form ($31 in the county's 2025 guide, $32.00 on the current form).

Book online, on the MDC Solid Waste app or by calling 311. Appointments open 30 days ahead and there are no waitlists. The pile goes out no more than 3 days early, by 7 a.m., within 10 feet of the street, five feet clear of mailboxes, cars, trees, poles and sprinklers, with 15 feet of clearance overhead.

The county takes furniture, appliances with fridge and freezer doors off, mattresses fully sealed in a mattress bag, rolled fencing, up to four tires and tree cuttings up to five feet. It refuses microwaves, TVs and electronics, central air units, fiberglass insulation, liquids, household chemicals, oil-based paint, rock, dirt and sand, and any single item over 150 pounds.

Why a kitchen tear-out outgrows the county limits

Construction materials such as cabinets, tubs, sinks, drywall, tile and concrete are allowed at the curb, but only up to 3 cubic yards (a pile no larger than 6 green 96-gallon carts), per the county. A kitchen or bathroom tear-out is almost always more than that. Add a cast-iron tub or a stone counter over 150 pounds and the county will not take it at all.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and hauls the lot in one visit: cabinets, counters, tile, flooring, drywall and fixtures. Room demo starts at $750 and construction debris pickup at $200. Jobs of $1,000 and over take a 50% deposit, and junk removal is paid after the job.

Permits in the Village: who does what

Permits come from the Village of Palmetto Bay Building & Permitting Department at 9705 East Hibiscus Street (305-259-1250, permits@palmettobay-fl.gov). Applicants must register on the Village's online portal before applying.

The Village demolition package says demolition permits are accepted only from qualified contractors who meet the Village's credential and insurance requirements, and that Miami-Dade DERM review and approval are required for all total demolitions. It also asks for an FPL disconnect letter and a no-Freon letter from a mechanical contractor, and any tree removal needs a DERM tree permit.

Rapid Haul does not pull permits. The GC or the property owner handles the permit. Rapid Haul handles the non-structural tear-out and the debris, and Dany will tell you up front if anything on your job is outside that.

Village of Parks homes

Palmetto Bay calls itself the Village of Parks. It sits just west of Biscayne Bay and was incorporated in 2002 from the former Cutler, Rockdale and East Perrine areas. Hurricane Andrew severely damaged it in 1992, and it was rebuilt. About 78% of its roughly 8,900 homes are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied value is $879,700.

Beyond tear-out debris, other common jobs here: garage cleanouts from $300, furniture removal from $125, appliance removal from $100 and shed removal from $350. Rapid Haul works across Cutler, East Perrine, Rockdale and Lakes by the Bay, and next door in Pinecrest, Kendall and Cutler Bay.

Self-hauling, and getting a price

The county's Eureka Drive Trash and Recycling Center is inside the Village at 9401 SW 184th Street. West Perrine (16651 SW 107th Avenue) and Chapman Field (13600 Old Cutler Road) are also nearby. All open daily 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with construction debris limited to three cubic yards per customer per day and no food garbage.

To skip the trips, call or text (754) 249-1015 with a photo. Dany, working out of Hollywood, answers himself and quotes one flat, all-in price for labor, loading, hauling and disposal. Call early and same-day pickup is often possible.

Palmetto Bay: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Does Palmetto Bay pick up bulk trash itself?

No. Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste handles all Village garbage, bulky trash and recycling. Bulky pickup is by appointment, two a year.

Can I put my old cabinets out for bulky pickup?

Only a small amount: construction materials are limited to 3 cubic yards per the county. A full kitchen usually needs a hauler.

What happens to items over 150 pounds?

The county will not take any single item over 150 pounds. Rapid Haul can, priced flat from a photo.

Do I need DERM approval for a demolition in Palmetto Bay?

For total demolitions, yes, per the Village demolition package. The GC or owner handles the permit; Rapid Haul does non-structural tear-out and the haul.

How much does a kitchen tear-out haul cost?

Room demo starts at $750 and construction debris at $200. Dany gives one flat price after a photo or a quick look.
