County pickup in South Miami Heights

South Miami Heights is unincorporated Miami-Dade, originally known as Eureka, and not the same place as the City of South Miami. The county's Department of Solid Waste Management collects trash twice a week and recycling every other week, and it handles bulky pickup.

Each household gets two bulky pickups a calendar year, up to 25 cubic yards each, or both combined into one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards. You have to book before anything goes out: online at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, in the MDC Solid Waste App, or through 311. Appointments open 30 days ahead, there are no waitlists or fit-ins, and cancellations need 2 days' notice. Set the pile out no more than 3 days early and by 7 a.m., or risk a warning up to a civil citation.

Yard debris and the curb rules

Big branches and tree limbs go out with bulky pickup, cut no longer than five feet. Small trimmings and leaves go in the green cart. The pile itself has rules:

Rapid Haul skips the appointment and the spacing rules. The crew loads the branches and the rest straight from your yard, cut or whole, and hauls it the same trip.

  • Within 10 feet of the street
  • At least five feet from mailboxes, cars, trees, utility poles and sprinkler heads
  • 15 feet of clear space up to the lowest branch or power line
  • No rock or dirt, no home chemicals, nothing over 150 lbs. in a single piece
  • Fridge and freezer doors off; mattresses enclosed in a plastic bag

Family homes, full garages

South Miami Heights has about 12,000 homes and 11,600 households, and more than a third of households have children under 18, per 2020 Census figures on Wikipedia. Zoo Miami and Thompson Memorial Park sit along its north side. In family homes, garages fill up, furniture gets outgrown and storms bring down branches, and two bulky appointments a year do not always cover it.

Rapid Haul takes all of it in one trip, priced as one flat number. Garage cleanouts start at $300, furniture removal at $125, appliances at $100, and full house cleanouts at $1,000. Rapid Haul also does fence removal and shed removal (from $350).

On the day, the crew walks the yard or garage with you, loads everything you point at, and sweeps the spot before they go. No pile sits on the swale waiting for an appointment.

Remodel debris and county permits

There is no city building department here. Demolition permits come from the Miami-Dade County Building Department, part of RER, and the county lists an extra form for owner-builder permits. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit.

The county caps construction debris at the curb at three cubic yards, and the Trash and Recycling Centers take three (3) cubic yards per customer per day. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out (kitchens, baths, flooring, decks from $550) and hauls the debris. Room tear-outs start at $750, and hauling a remodeler's leftover debris starts at $200.

Booking, pricing and the local drop-off

Rapid Haul is based in Hollywood, and Miami-Dade is one of its two main counties. Text (754) 249-1015 with a photo and Dany sends back one flat price covering labor, loading, hauling and disposal. Same-day is often possible when you call early, and junk removal is paid after the job.

If you would rather haul it yourself, the county runs a Trash and Recycling Center named for the community, at 20800 SW 117 Court, open daily 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Bring a Florida license or ID showing an eligible address. It takes household trash, yard cuttings and limited construction debris, but no food waste. The Eureka Drive center at 9401 SW 184th St is also nearby.
