What the contractor needed
One of my contractor friends had a full house to remodel and asked me to help him with the demo. His crew would build it back. My job was to take the inside out and get it off the property.
The list was long. Carpet in the bedrooms, laminate flooring on the floors and, in this house, laminate on the walls too. The kitchen had to go, and so did a bathroom. He ran the project. We did the non-structural tear-out and the haul.
Day one: floors, walls and carpet
We started with the soft stuff. All the carpet came up, the laminate came off the floors and the walls, and we worked through the bedrooms and a bathroom. We did not start on the kitchen on day one.
The house moved fast. By the end of that first day my friend was already putting up some drywall in a room we had finished. That is how a good demo should feel for the contractor: we clear a room, his crew can work in it.
The kitchen, the tile and the dump runs
Next came the kitchen. Every cabinet came out, plus the shelves, and the kitchen turned into a pile of cabinets and black bags. In the bathroom we bagged tile and drywall as it came off.
Debris does not sit at a job like this. In my part two video I am at the dump with the first load, and I said we would "probably do like three loads" that day. I went back to pick up the last black bags and to chip the remaining tile off the floor myself.
How it ended
It took us about four days start to finish. At the walkthrough the carpet was gone, the kitchen was gone, the laminate on the walls was gone, the tile was chipped up and the bathroom was demoed. In my words from the video: "Just completely ready for renovations."
